Jestings Typeface and Euchre Cards

A deck of cards and a pamphlet presenting Jestings, my typeface inspired by medieval jesters.

Full of chaos and whimsy, Jestings is designed to be modular and freeform, allowed to be manipulated as the user desires. Its type specimen “book” is in the form of a 25-card Euchre deck.

From the initial inspirations, I sketched and inked sample letters and words to identify the core motifs for the project. Using those elements, I drafted designs for the rest of the alphabet, numbers, and punctuation before scanning and transferring them to Adobe Illustrator via shape tools and pathfinder.

The deck box's illustration and the joker card feature a bird-like jester, a character I created to embody the soul of this project. The initial design was based off a barn owl and adapted to fit the project's monochromatic blue colour scheme. They’re playful and eccentric, just like the typeface itself.
